Matiang’I clarified his financial position
The Jubilee Party 2027 presidential candidate Dr Fred Matiang’i is depending on well wishers to fund his campaigns for the country’s highest office. In a video statement dated December 27, 2025, Matiang’i clarified his financial position, stating he is not involved in high-profile business ventures. He noted that he lacks wealth from sectors like gold trade or insurance broking, positioning himself as an ordinary public servant relying on community support. The former Interior Cabinet Secretary emphasised that his 2027 presidential campaign under the Jubilee Party is largely driven by grassroots volunteerism, highlighting a people-powered approach distinct from traditional funding models. Matiang’i explained that his campaign benefits significantly from voluntary contributions and efforts. He revealed that two-thirds of his campaign team consists of unpaid volunteers, including fellow teachers and supporters making small donations or dedicating time weekly. Many individuals fuel their vehicles to participate in activities or pause their businesses to assist, reflecting a growing movement of Kenyans committed to national improvement. “Everybody knows that I am not a famous businessman. I have not smuggled gold from Sudan or DRC or anywhere. I am not a cold businessman. I don’t sell gold. Everybody knows that. I am not an insurance broker. I’ve never done any of those things. You know, I’ve not supplied insurance cover to the police or TSC,” he said. “I am just Fred Matiang’i here. So I am benefiting from all these wonderful people. My fellow teachers and others who make small contributions. Volunteers. Two-thirds of the people who work for me on the campaign are volunteers,” he added. Matiang’i intends to sustain and build on this model as the bid progresses toward the 2027 General Election. This volunteer-driven strategy aligns with Matiang’i’s broader political resurgence. The Jubilee Party officially endorsed him as its presidential flagbearer on October 30, 2025, following a National Executive Council meeting chaired by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta. Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni announced the decision, confirming the council’s approval of Matiang’i’s application and his role as the party’s representative in the United Opposition coalition. Matiang’i, a career technocrat who served in Education, Interior, and ICT ministries, formally launched his presidential ambition earlier in 2025 during a homecoming event in Gusii Stadium. He has since conducted nationwide tours, engaging youth on voter registration and regional leaders on coalition-building. Rising support for Jubilee Party Recent polling underscores momentum behind his candidacy. A TIFA Research survey released on December 23, 2025, showed Jubilee Party support surging from 3% in August to 11% in November, placing it third nationally behind ODM at 20% and UDA at 16%. Analysts attributed the rise primarily to Uhuru Kenyatta’s visible endorsement of Matiang’i as deputy party leader and flagbearer. The survey, conducted from November 10 to 17 among 2,053 adults across all counties, with a ±2.16% margin of error, also noted a decline in uncommitted voters from 31% with no party affiliation in August to 22% in November, and an increase in political mobilisation, with 26% of Kenyans attending rallies since 2022.
