The race to succeed or unseat incumbent Governor Wavinya Ndeti is steadily emerging as one of the most closely watched political contests ahead of the 2027 General Election, with several influential figures already positioning themselves for the seat.

Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga is reportedly considering an ambitious bid on a Wiper Democratic Movement ticket.

While the move could pit him against President William Ruto, sources indicate that Mainga, whose tenure at Kenya Railways is expected to end next year, has held a series of consultations with senior Wiper officials as he assesses his political prospects in Machakos.

If he joins the race, Mainga would enter an increasingly crowded field that already includes incumbent Governor Wavinya Ndeti, who is expected to seek a second and final term, and Mavoko MP Patrick Makau, who has publicly declared his interest in the county's top seat.

Former State House Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita has also been widely linked to another gubernatorial bid under the UDA banner, setting the stage for a highly competitive contest.

Political observers say the battle for the Wiper ticket could prove as competitive as the general election itself.

Machakos remains one of Wiper's strongest political bastions under party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, making the party nomination a decisive factor in determining the eventual governor.

Governor Wavinya is expected to campaign on her administration's development record, particularly in infrastructure, healthcare, water projects and women's empowerment initiatives.

Meanwhile, Patrick Makau has pitched himself as a leader capable of restoring what he describes as the county's lost glory through accountable and transformative leadership.

Should Mainga officially declare his candidature, he is likely to campaign on his record as a technocrat who has overseen major railway modernization projects, expansion of freight transport, and infrastructure development during his tenure at Kenya Railways.

His supporters are expected to argue that his experience in managing large public projects would be valuable in accelerating development in Machakos County.

The entry of Mainga would also introduce an interesting political dynamic given his close association with President William Ruto's administration while seeking the ticket of an opposition-leaning Wiper Party.

Political analysts believe such a move could reshape alliances within Machakos and attract both supporters of the Kenya Kwanza administration and traditional Wiper supporters.

With more than a year before party nominations, consultations and grassroots mobilization have already intensified across Machakos, signaling that the county is headed for one of the country's most fiercely contested gubernatorial races.
