Complementing the infrastructure drive was the chakula moto moto na maathe programme
Githunguri Constituency has undergone a transformative shift in public education following the successful completion of a far-reaching development programme spearheaded by area Member of Parliament (MP), Gathoni Wamuchomba (Maathe). The comprehensive initiative, which covered sanitation, learning infrastructure, security, and student welfare, has significantly improved learning conditions for thousands of pupils and students across public primary and secondary schools, firmly repositioning education as a cornerstone of the constituency’s development agenda. A major highlight of the programme was the construction of new ablution blocks in nine schools, addressing long-standing sanitation challenges. The facilities were completed at Ciiko Primary School, Kwa Mukua Secondary School, Kiambururu Secondary School, Githioro Primary School, Thuita Primary School, Mitahato Primary School, Githiga Primary School, Gathiruini Primary School, and Riamute Primary School. The improved sanitation infrastructure has enhanced hygiene, learner dignity, and school attendance, particularly among younger pupils. “Every child in Githunguri deserves to learn in a safe, clean, and empowering environment. When we invest in sanitation, laboratories, classrooms, and nutrition, we are investing directly in the future of our children and the prosperity of this constituency,” said the Legislator. To improve classroom organisation and safeguard learning materials, more than 1,000 lockers were distributed to 11 primary schools, including Matuguta, Gatitu, Kambui, Kamondo, Kanyore, Mukua, Gathanje, Gathaithi, Kahunira, Kagema, and Kanjai. The initiative has helped instill order, responsibility, and pride among learners while easing the daily burden of carrying books. “Simple things like lockers go a long way in promoting discipline, responsibility, and pride among learners,” Wamuchomba noted. School safety and infrastructure were further enhanced through the construction of new perimeter walls at Githiga Primary School and Kiawairia Primary School, significantly improving security and protecting school property. At Ciiko Primary School, the entire compound was upgraded with cabro installation, improving drainage, accessibility, and the overall learning environment. In a strong push for science-based learning, modern laboratories were completed at Matuguta, Githunguri, Ndireti, Ngewa, and Githunguri Primary Schools, strengthening the foundation for STEM education. In addition, four classrooms at Gathugu Primary School were fully renovated, restoring safe and conducive learning spaces. Complementing the infrastructure drive was the Chakula Moto Moto na Maathe programme, a feeding initiative that covered all public secondary day schools across the constituency. The programme ensured learners accessed hot meals during the school day, significantly improving concentration, retention, and overall academic performance. “No child should struggle to learn on an empty stomach. This programme is about equity, dignity, and giving every learner a fair chance,” Wamuchomba emphasized. For the second consecutive year, parents of students at Githunguri Secondary Day Schools will pay just KShs. 500 in school fees, a measure that has eased the financial burden on families, expanded access to education, and helped reduce dropout rates. The successful completion of the projects underscores a deliberate and holistic approach to education development, addressing both learning conditions and learner welfare. Across Githunguri, schools now stand as safer, more dignified, and inspiring spaces, anchoring education as a central pillar of long-term social and economic progress in the constituency.
