University Student Charged over Alleged Offensive Remarks Against President Ruto and his Children

A Chuka University student has been charged with using offensive language against President William Ruto and his children.

According to the charge sheet, the comments were made in a video clip posted on TikTok on June 25, 2026.

According to the charge sheet, the video was allegedly recorded during a Linda Mwananchi rally held in Keumbu, Kisii County. Prosecutors argue that the words used were likely to provoke a breach of the peace, contrary to Section 94(1) of the Penal Code.

Court records indicate that the student was arrested on July 21 before being released on a cash bail of Sh5,000.

His bail was paid by lawyer Danstan Omari, who told the court that the student had no source of income and was pursuing his education with support from the church.

Omari said the accused initially admitted the charge because he feared he would be denied bail before receiving legal advice.

"We were in court on a different matter when we interacted with the young man and advised him to change his plea. We are here to represent him on a pro bono basis and offer to pay the cash bail for him," Omari told the court.

The lawyer added that the student's first plea was influenced by concerns that he would remain in custody if he denied the charge.

"The student feared he would not be admitted to bond, hence originally pleading guilty," Omari said.

The case will now proceed to a hearing, with the prosecution expected to present evidence to support its claim that the alleged remarks amounted to offensive conduct likely to disturb public peace.

Mauti remains out on the Sh5,000 cash bail pending the determination of the case.
