United opposition Spokesman Mukhisa Kituyi Joins Linda Mwananchi
The United opposition Spokesperson and head of the Secretariat Dr Mukhisa Kituyi has joined the Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna led has Linda Mwananchi political movement.
Kituyi who is the Party of Growth and Prosperity (PGP) founder visited Sifuna's office on Wednesday morning, accompanied by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi.
In a statement, Sifuna described Kituyi as a valuable addition to the opposition-backed movement, which has been positioning itself ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“Humbled to receive Hon Mukhisa Kituyi at the office this morning in the company of my Senate colleagues Sen Khalwale and Sen Osotsi,” Sifuna said.
“Hon Kituyi will be a great addition to the Linda Mwananchi team! Karibu Omwami,” he added.
Kituyi, a former United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) secretary-general, has previously served as Kenya's Trade Minister and as an MP for Kimilili.
His meeting with Sifuna comes amid renewed efforts by opposition leaders to consolidate their political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Linda Mwananchi movement has in recent weeks brought together several opposition figures, including Sifuna and Khalwale.
Recent reports have also pointed to growing efforts within the movement to establish a political vehicle ahead of the next General Election.
Kituyi has built a career spanning Kenyan politics, academia, government, regional trade diplomacy and international leadership.
Before entering elective politics, he worked in research and development, including at Norway’s Christian Michelsen Institute and the African Centre for Technology Studies in Nairobi.
He also served as a programme officer with the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation.
Kituyi entered Parliament in 1992, winning the Kimilili seat on a Ford-Kenya ticket. He was re-elected in 1997 and 2002, serving a total of 15 years as an MP.
During his parliamentary career, he held opposition leadership roles and served on parliamentary committees, including Defence and Foreign Affairs.
His biggest national government role came after the 2002 election, when President Mwai Kibaki appointed him Minister for Trade and Industry, a position he held from 2002 to 2007.
His tenure gave him a prominent role in regional and international trade negotiations. He chaired the COMESA Council of Ministers and the African Trade Ministers’ Council, and also chaired the Council of Ministers of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States.
He was a lead negotiator for Eastern and Southern African countries during negotiations for an EU-ACP Economic Partnership Agreement.
Last year, the United Opposition, comprising former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, People's Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, and Wiper Patriotic Front party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, appointed Kituyi as the United opposition Spokesperson and head of the Secretariat.
