United Opposition Signs Unity Deal to Wrestle Ruto from Power in 2027

Oppositiom outfit the United Alternative Government Principals have signed a unity pledge and coalition agreement, committing to remain united and support a single presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election.

"After extensive and candid consultations, we have unanimously agreed to execute a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Unity Agreement, through which each Principal commits individually and collectively to remain united, participate in a credible process of selecting our presidential candidate," the principals said.

The principals signed the agreement in Kiambu on Monday, where met agreed to participate in a joint, credible process to select their presidential candidate and to support whoever emerges as the coalition's nominee.

Principals present were former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka of Wiper Patriotic Front, People's Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua, former Interior Minister and Jubilee Deputy Party leader Dr Fred Matiang’i, former Attorney General Justin Muturi of Democratic Party (DP), Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) chief Eugene Wamalwa, ex-Meru Governor Peter Munya, former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti of Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) and ex-assistant minister of trade Omingo Magara People's Democratic Party (PDP ).

Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala signed the agreement on behalf of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) .

They acknowledged that maintaining their unity ahead of the 2027 elections would require sacrifice, discipline, tolerance and courage.

“This is therefore more than a political understanding among leaders. It is a covenant with the people of Kenya. We have chosen to walk it together,” the principals said.

Under the Personal Unity Pledge, each principal has committed to respect the collective decisions of the coalition, participate faithfully in the presidential selection process and provide their political support and resources to the eventual candidate.

The Coalition Unity Agreement further commits the leaders to a fair, transparent and credible process of selecting the presidential candidate.

The principals have also pledged to support the eventual nominee regardless of who is selected, while agreeing not to undermine the candidate, sponsor rival bids or take actions that could divide the coalition.
