Repeat Phase III Grassroots Elections, originally set for Saturday, March 7, 2026, have now been rescheduled
The ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ongoing grassroots elections have been postponed to allow time to mourn the late Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament (MP), Johana Ng’eno, who tragically died in a helicopter crash in the Mosop area while en route to Narok. In a statement released by the UDA National Elections Board (NEB) on Monday, March 2, 2026, the board expressed regret over the sudden loss of one of its distinguished leaders and informed party leaders, members, and candidates of the changes to the election schedule. The statement indicated that the Repeat Phase III Grassroots Elections, originally set for Saturday, March 7, 2026, have now been rescheduled to Saturday, March 14, 2026. According to NEB, this applies to counties including Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Embu, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Samburu, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Baringo, Laikipia, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, and Vihiga. “The UDA National Elections Board (NEB) regrettably wishes to inform all the respective UDA Leaders, Members and Candidates of the postponement of the Repeat Phase III Grassroots Elections slated for Saturday, March 7, 2026, following the sudden and tragic demise of one of its distinguished Leaders, Hon. Johana Ng’eno, Member of Parliament, Emurua Dikirr, Narok County.” Meanwhile, the Repeat Phase II Grassroots Elections for counties such as Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Taita Taveta, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, Isiolo, Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Turkana, Kajiado, Bungoma, Siaya, Kisumu, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, and Kakamega have been rescheduled to Thursday, April 9, 2026. The NEB urged all party members to understand and cooperate with the revised timelines, describing the postponement as a necessary step in respect and solidarity. During the period of mourning, the late leader, who was elected on the party’s ticket in 2022, is being honoured. This comes at a time when the remains of the late MP and five others who were aboard the helicopter at the point of the crash are resting at Lee Funeral Home after being repatriated from the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), where they were temporarily preserved following evacuation from the accident scene. Funeral and burial arrangements for the late MP are in full swing. The National Assembly Speaker formed a 10-member committee led by Tindiret MP Julius Meli, assisted by Buuri MP Mugambi Rindikiri and eight others, to liaise with the late MP’s family regarding the burial arrangements.
