Two people have been rescued alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in Eastleigh, Nairobi, as the search for others enters its seventh day.

On Thursday, October 29, 2026, rescue teams said they had cleared about 80 per cent of the rubble. They were working to reach the basement, where more people could still be trapped.

Rescuers hope to find more survivors

National Disaster Management Unit Director Duncan Ochieng said the team hoped to reach the bottom of the building by Thursday evening, during the night or by Friday morning.

He said rescuers still hoped to find more people alive. However, their chances would depend on their condition and whether they had suffered injuries when the building collapsed.

The two survivors were rescued earlier in the operation and taken to hospital for treatment. Their rescue gave families waiting at the scene hope that their loved ones could also be found alive.

Families wait for news

Families of missing people have continued to camp near the site as rescue teams work day and night.

About 16 people remained unaccounted for in the latest update, with some families still waiting for news about their relatives.

The operation involves national disaster management officers, Nairobi County officials, the Kenya Red Cross, the National Youth Service (NYS), police and military officers.

A special rescue vehicle was also brought to the scene to support the work.

The teams are moving carefully through the rubble as they try to reach the basement and find the people who are still missing. Families continue to hope that the search will bring more survivors. Read the latest update on families waiting for missing relatives.

By Thursday, no public update had been issued by relevant government agencies on whether the building’s owners would face action.

There had also been no reported arrests or prosecutions of the owners over the collapse, leaving families and residents waiting for answers as rescue teams continued searching for missing people.
