Tusker Intoxicates Al-Ahli to CAF Confederation Cup Second Round

The 1994 African Cup Winners' Cup finalists, Tusker FC, have secured smooth passage to the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup after edging Sudanese side Al-Ahli Wad Medani 1-0 at the Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday, September 12th, 2026 in Nairobi.

Tusker broke the deadlock for the all important goal just past the hour mark after Stephen Etyang' produced a pinpoint long ball into the path of Chris Erambo, who took it in his stride before opening up his body and delicately guiding the ball beyond the advancing Mohammed Abdallah with his right foot.

The goal gave Tusker a 3-2 aggregate advantage and put them firmly in control of the tie.

Julien Mette's side will now face the winner between Tanzanian outfit Singida Black Stars and South Sudanese side Al-Ghazal, with the winner earning a lucrative ticket to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup.

The victory over Al-Ahli also marked the first time in 30 years that Tusker have beaten Sudanese opposition in CAF interclub competitions since beating Hay Al-Arab SC 1-0 on aggregate, but eventually lost to Kawkab Marrakesh in the semis of the 1996 CAF Cup.

Al Ahli Madani head coach Aliyu Zubairu has blamed the weather in Nairobi, claiming Kenya’s capital has insufficient oxygen.

Speaking to the media after the game, the former Nigeria U20 head coach played down any suggestion that they had underestimated their opponents, stating that although they dominated the game, they failed to make the most of their opportunities, allowing Tusker to punish them with their own chance.

“Well, football is all about winning and losing. It’s either you win, you draw or you lose. And in football, when you go to play, there are no minnows. Every country that comes to participate in the competition has a good team. So we came, we played, and we did not use our own chances, while Tusker got their opportunity and made use of it,” he explained.
