Thierry Henry Breaks Down the Argentina vs Egypt VAR Controversy

Former Arsenal and France legend Thierry Henry has weighed in on one of the most debated moments of the FIFA World Cup, arguing that the real issue is not whether the referee got every decision right—but whether VAR applied the same standard consistently throughout the match.

Henry noted that while Egypt's disallowed goal underwent an extensive VAR review, later penalty appeals from the North Africans appeared to receive far less scrutiny, leaving fans questioning the consistency of the officiating process.

"The biggest issue isn't that people disagree. Football has always been full of disagreements. The real issue is consistency," Henry said.

According to the football icon, supporters do not demand perfection from referees. Instead, they expect every decisive incident to be treated with the same level of care, regardless of which team is involved.

"If one incident receives an exhaustive review, supporters naturally expect another equally important incident to receive exactly the same attention. When that doesn't happen, controversy becomes inevitable."

Despite the officiating debate, Henry praised Argentina for showing remarkable resilience to fight back and secure qualification, while also applauding Egypt's disciplined and courageous performance that nearly produced one of the tournament's biggest upsets.

"The result will remain in the history books. Argentina go through. Egypt go home. But the discussion surrounding VAR will continue, because whenever fans believe consistency is missing, the conversation stops being about football and starts being about officiating."

Henry concluded by stressing that football should always be remembered for the players' performances—not the referees' decisions.
