The former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko led National Economic Development Party (NEDP) will try its hand in competitive politics for the first time since its formation by fielding candidates in the forthcoming by-elections scheduled for February 26th, 2026. The fielding of candidates marked the party’s formal entry into Kenya’s by-election race and signaled its readiness to test its grassroots appeal at the ballot. NEDP party officials say the issuance of nomination certificates marks the beginning of an aggressive national rollout aimed at building momentum ahead of future electoral contests. In addition to Isack Abduba Fayo’s nomination for the Isiolo South constituency MP seat, the party also issued certificates to George Mukhwana – West Kabras MCA seat in Malava Constituency (kakamega county), Cosmas Njeru – Muminji Ward, Mbeere North Constituency and Martin Mukundi – Evurore Ward, Mbeere North Constituency both in Embu county. Isack Abduba Fayo a former Kinna ward representative has been cleared to contest to become the first candidate to seek for a parliamentary seat under the party which was fully6 registered on December 9th, 2025. Those cleared by the IEBC for the Isiolo South parliamentary seat are Tubi Mohammed Tubi, who is vying on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket and his sister, Bina Mohammed Tubi, who is sponsored by the Jubilee Party. Sonko pledged that the party will fully support to the NEDP candidates, promising a door-to-door, people-centered campaign strategy unlike anything voters have seen before. “You will not walk alone. We shall be on the ground with you, engaging voters directly. NEDP is about service, delivery, and economic empowerment,” he added. Sonko is set to use his new party as a driver for his political ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections. With with the registration of the party, NEDP will now provide Sonko with a new and independent platform for him to revive his political career ahead of 2027.
