Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson has led a citywide mega clean-up across all 17 sub-counties, bringing together the 4,500-strong Green Army, county staff, residents, businesses and other stakeholders.

The exercise targets neighbourhoods, roads and drainage channels as the county steps up preparations for the expected heavy rains. Nairobi currently collects about 3,200 tonnes of garbage daily.

Sakaja urged residents to take responsibility for their surroundings, calling on every household, business and institution to maintain at least 100 metres around their premises.

“Nairobi Lazima Iwork is not just about what the county government does. It is about what each one of us does. If every Nairobi resident takes responsibility for the space around them, keeps their neighbourhood clean and protects our drainage, we will build the Nairobi we all want to see,” he said.

The Governor also invited Nairobi residents to join a citywide clean-up on Saturday, October 10, to mark Mazingira Day, urging communities, businesses and institutions to make environmental responsibility a daily habit.

Green Nairobi CEC Maureen Njeri said the campaign seeks to shift the city from a culture of relying solely on the county to one where residents actively maintain their surroundings.

The clean-up is part of wider reforms under Green Nairobi, including efforts to strengthen waste collection, transportation, processing and disposal and improve accountability in the sector.

The county has also intensified efforts to clear drainage channels ahead of the rains, warning residents against dumping waste in waterways, which can worsen flooding.
