Police Hunt for Kuresoi MP Alfred Mutai After Three Shot in Clash
Police have launched a manhunt for Kuresoi North Member of Parliament (MP) Alfred Mutai following a violent confrontation between his supporters and those of Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika in Kuresoi Sub-County that left three people with gunshot injuries.
In a statement issued on Friday, the National Police Service (NPS) said preliminary investigations indicate that chaos erupted during a youth empowerment meeting held at Sirikwa Umoja Grounds and attended by Governor Susan Kihika, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi and Bahati MP Irene Njoki.
According to police, the confrontation involved suspected goons allied to Mutai and supporters of Governor Kihika.
"Several individuals sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment," read the statement signed by NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga.
The violence also saw a bus, registration number KDQ 155G, which had ferried tents and chairs to the venue, set ablaze by unknown persons.
Police said Mutai is the prime suspect in the incident and is currently on the run.
"The service is pursuing the prime suspect, Hon. Alfred Mutai, who is currently on the run. Police officers have launched a manhunt to apprehend him and other persons connected to the incident," Nyaga said.
The police urged the legislator to surrender to the nearest police station and assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over political violence and intolerance in parts of the country.
NPS warned that individuals found engaging in violence, sponsoring criminal gangs, inciting supporters or disrupting lawful gatherings would face the full force of the law.
"No person, regardless of social status, political affiliation, or public office, is above the law," the NPS Spokesperson added.
The police also called on political leaders and their supporters to exercise restraint and uphold peace, warning against the use of violence to settle political differences.
