Manchester United winger Amad Diallo Earns Ivory Coast Win over Ecuador in World Cup Opener
Manchester United winger Amad Diallo scored a superb 90th-minute winner as Ivory Coast beat Ecuador in Philadelphia in both teams’ Group E opener on Saturday night.
It was a stunning finish as the substitute opened his left foot to divert the ball into the corner after a powerful run from Wilfried Singo - and it ended a 19-game unbeaten run stretching for almost two years for Ecuador.
Amad was a surprise exclusion from Ivory Coast's starting line-up on their return to the World Cup for the first time in 12 years.
But he made a major impact with the winner which gives them a huge chance to qualify out of Group E - which also includes Germany and Curacao - and reach the knockout stages for the first time in their history.
"We came here to make history," said Amad. "We still have two more matches ahead of us, and we need to approach them with the same mentality and try to win them."
It was the African team’s first win against South American opponents after defeats to Argentina (2006), Brazil (2010), and Colombia (2014).
What's next for these teams?
Ivory Coast will take on Germany on Saturday 20 Juneat BMO Field in Toronto while Ecuador face Curacao on Sunday 21 June at Kansas City Stadium.
