M-KOPA has unveiled its first Kenya-specific Impact Report for Kenya, a first market-specific report of its kind, highlighting the company’s significant milestone of unlocking over KES 207 billion in access to formal finance since 2010. This expansion has bolstered financial inclusion in underserved communities, empowering customers to invest in essential digital tools and services. Digital access forms the cornerstone of M-KOPA’s impact, with 4.5 million customers now utilizing smartphones, including 2.1 million who are first-time smartphone owners. Sixty-seven percent of users report using M-KOPA products for income generation, while 52% have experienced an increase in earnings since joining the platform. This growth highlights the vital link between technology access and economic opportunity in Kenya’s informal economy. KEY HIGHLIGHTS 4.9 million Customers Served: Since its inception in 2010, M-KOPA has unlocked an impressive KES 207 billion in credit, significantly expanding access to formal finance and essential digital tools. Digital Access Driving Livelihoods: M-KOPA has empowered 4.5 million smartphone users, including 2.1 million first-time owners. Notably, 67% of these users leverage M-KOPA products for income generation, with 52% reporting increased earnings. Local Economic Impact: The company supports 14,000 sales agents and employs 1,320 people directly. In 2024, M-KOPA contributed KES 3.79 billion in taxes and invested KES 20.3 billion in local procurement. Its Nairobi smartphone assembly facility has produced 2 million devices, fostering skilled manufacturing jobs and supporting circular economy principles. Climate Leadership: M-KOPA has avoided a cumulative 2.03 million tonnes of CO2e through solar solutions, refurbished devices, and e-mobility initiatives, selling over 5,000 e-motorbikes to foster sustainable transportation.
