Kenyan Premier League Season Kick-off Postponed for Third Time
The much anticipated Kenya's top flight league 2026/27 season kick-off has once again been postponed until further notice.
The league, which had been postponed twice, was scheduled to kick off today on Saturday, 19 September, but was on Friday, 18 September cancelled in the middle of the night, through an email sent to FKFPL clubs chairmen and CEOs.
The latest postponement comes as a big blow to clubs who had already travelled for away matches, including Shabana FC, who are in Kirinyaga ready to face Posta Rangers, as well as APS Bomet, who are in Nairobi, where they were scheduled to face Mathare United.
“We regret to inform all participating clubs and Partners that the League kick-off has been postponed until further notice," FKF's Leagues and Competitions' statement to clubs, read. "We will provide a comprehensive statement with regard to the details surrounding the postponement. Kindly accept our sincerest apologies for any inconveniences caused."
The postponement comes after the High Court in Murang’a stopped the commencement of the league, until a playoff between Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United is played.
The ruling followed an application by Evans Nduta, who moved to court to challenge the commencement of the league, alongside his substantive case challenging the application of the FKF 2025 regulations.
Sitting at the Murang’a High Court, Lady Justice Hon. Dorah Chepkwony ordered that the matter be heard on Thursday, 24 September.
In the same court, FKF President Hussein Mohammed and Leagues and Competitions Head Frank Ogolla were also directed to appear in person on Tuesday, 22 September, after being cited for contempt of court on multiple occasions.
In a related matter, the High Court in Kiambu on Friday directed that Mombasa United be included in the 2026/27 season fixtures, following a case filed by the Center for Litigation Trust.
The organization, which moved to court under a certificate of urgency, obtained ex-parte orders directing that the Mombasa-based club be included as the 18th club in the league.
