Nairobi, Kenya – The race for the Kamukunji parliamentary seat is shaping up to be a closely contested two-horse battle, with the latest July 2026 InTouch Poll placing incumbent Hon. Yusuf Hassan Abdi slightly ahead of former MP Hon. Simon Mbugua.

According to the opinion poll, Hon. Yusuf Hassan commands an approval rating of 48 percent, while Hon. Simon Mbugua follows closely with 42 percent, pointing to one of Nairobi's most competitive parliamentary contests ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The survey suggests that a majority of voters in Kamukunji have already formed their preferences, leaving little room for dramatic shifts unless significant political developments emerge before the election.

The research further indicates that Simon Mbugua enjoys relatively stronger support in Pumwani and California wards. However, Hon. Yusuf Hassan maintains a commanding lead across the remaining wards, giving him the overall advantage in the constituency.

The opinion poll was conducted through telephone interviews involving more than 10,000 respondents, with participants proportionately distributed across all wards in Kamukunji Constituency. Besides the parliamentary contest, the research also examined voter opinions on several other political and governance issues.

The findings also reveal that the ODM Party remains the most popular political party among voters in Kamukunji. However, both Hon. Yusuf Hassan and Hon. Simon Mbugua are widely expected to seek the parliamentary seat on a UDA party ticket.

While supporters of Hon. Yusuf Hassan largely believe he will contest under UDA, there is less certainty among Simon Mbugua's supporters. A section of his supporters expects him to run on the DCP party ticket, while others believe he could seek the UDA nomination. Political analysts say his eventual choice of party could influence his support, particularly among voters who identify strongly with specific political parties.

Hon. Simon Mbugua is no stranger to Kamukunji politics. He previously served as the constituency's Member of Parliament and later represented Kenya in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), where he served as a Member of the regional Parliament.

On the other hand, Hon. Yusuf Hassan has established himself as one of Nairobi's longest-serving Members of Parliament. He was first elected in the August 2011 by-election and has successfully defended his seat in the 2013, 2017, and 2022 General Elections. He is currently serving his fourth consecutive term as the MP for Kamukunji.

With both leaders enjoying strong name recognition, established political networks, and loyal support bases, Kamukunji is expected to witness one of the most closely watched parliamentary contests in Nairobi. As campaigns gradually gather momentum, the latest July 2026 InTouch Poll suggests the race remains highly competitive, with Yusuf Hassan holding a narrow but significant lead over his longtime political rival, Simon Mbugua.
