There is growing suspicion within the sports fraternity on the under dealings of the new president of the National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOCK) Shadrack Maluki following a series of sinister trips suspected to be a more elaborate money laundering syndicate. Maluki, who is currently on an official visit to Russia accompanied by the NOCK accountant Tony Karuru is suspected to be using fake travel plans colluding with rogue travel agencies to defraud NOCK of huge sums of money. Russia is banned by the International Olympics Committee but Maluki is on a trip to Russia which has no dealings with the World Olympics movement at the moment raising eyebrows as to the reason for the travel by the NOCK president and the accountant and how the week-long travel to Russia will benefit the Kenyan Olympics Movement. What is Maluki doing in Russia a banned country which was flagged due to state sponsored doping menace? Several sports administrator led by the Kenya Volleyball Federation assistant treasurer Moses Mbuthia have raised concerns about suspicion of a syndicate where NOCK officials make arrangements to travel but switch off their phones once at the airport. NOCK pays for the trips while no officials make the actual trip defrauding the federation of huge amounts. Just over 100 days in office, Maluki inherited accounts with over 30 million shillings but the NOCK accounts currently has a paltry Ksh 3 Million. NOCK has been hosting people at their offices while no meetings are held apart from passing time over tea and snacks. In the meantime, NOCK has an upcoming event which the federation has no money to fund. With the recent swop by the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) which led to a recovery of over 3.5 million shillings from the sports department, stakeholders in the sports industry are now calling on the EACC to move in and investigate the funds that NOCK receives from the Sports Fund and how the money is used and incase of any misappropriation, they call for the arrest and prosecution of any corrupt officials. The travel scandal at NOCK adds to a long list of financial mismanagement cases that have plagued Kenya’s sports industry over the years. Notably, the 2016 Rio Olympics scandal saw funds meant for athletes’ travel and welfare embezzled.
