Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has unveiled green number plates for all electric vehicles (EVs) in Kenya.
The green number plates make electric vehicles easy to identify and signal support for lower carbon emissions which will identify electric vehicles on the road.
“Like I did mention in my remarks, this will be the new kid in town. All EV vehicles will now be green, registered in green number plates,” said Chirchir.
He joked with a visiting ambassador:
“So, Ambassador, I don’t know whether you continue being on red or we get this BMW from Germany and give you these green number plates.”
Chirchir urged leaders and participants in the National Policy Mobility Lounge to adopt the plates.
Electric vehicle numbers in Kenya have grown steadily in recent years, particularly electric motorcycles. The new rules aim to boost local assembly, create jobs, and reduce fuel imports. Officials say the move will strengthen the economy and deliver a cleaner environment for all Kenyans.
At same time, Kenya officially launched its National e-Mobility Policy on February 3, 2026, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi presided over by over Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir.
The policy outlines steps to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles across the country. It aligns with Kenya’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 32 per cent by 2030, recognising the transport sector as a key contributor to climate change.
“We reaffirm the government’s unwavering commitment to building a cleaner, smarter, affordable, and more sustainable transport system for our country,” he said. “We will also be reaching out to our neighbouring countries to ensure a harmonised approach in the development and adoption of electric mobility to facilitate seamless cross-border improvement.”
He stressed the need for swift, disciplined action.
“Lastly, ladies and gentlemen, let’s move with speed and with discipline, building quality standards, enabling investment, expanding infrastructure, skilling our workforce, and ensuring affordability and inclusion. If we do this well, Kenya will not only adopt electric mobility, we will build an industry, create jobs, strengthen our currency position, and deliver cleaner air and better livelihoods.”
Chirchir also highlighted the economic and environmental benefits.
“Through partnerships, innovation, and shared vision, we can transform our transport sector into a powerful engine of green growth, economic resilience, and environmental stewardship. One that creates opportunities for our people while safeguarding our planet.”
