Gor Mahia Extend 41 year Wait for CECAFA Clubs' Title, after loss to Rayon Sports

Kenyan Premier League record champions Gor Mahia's 41 year wait for for the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) clubs title was extended after going down 2-1 to Rwandese club Rayon Sports after extra time in an entertaining 2026 final played at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda.

Rwandan substitute Daniel Muhoza emerged as the unlikely hero in the 97th minute, when he produced a stunning acrobatic extra time finish for Rayon Sports to end their 28-year wait for CECAFA Kagame Cup glory that had finished 1-1 in regulation time.

Rayon went on to withstand relentless pressure despite being reduced to 10 men, sealing only their second Kagame Cup title, and first since 1998.

For Gor Mahia, it was another painful near miss as their wait for a fourth regional crown stretched to 41 years, having last lifted the trophy in 1985 , when they beat their domestic rivals AFC Leopards 2-0 in the final.

The victory crowned a memorable campaign for Rayon Sports, who finally reclaimed the CECAFA Kagame Cup after nearly three decades and lifted the regional trophy for only the second time in the club's history.

The defeat for Gor Mahia marked another heartbreaking chapter in their pursuit of regional glory.

Despite an encouraging tournament that saw them eliminate strong opposition en route to the final, Charles Akonnor's men were left to settle for silver medals once again as their four-decade wait for a fourth Kagame Cup title continued.
