Former Shinyalu Member of Parliament (MP) Daniel Khamasi has died aged 79.
Khamasi, who served as the MP for Shinyalu for two consecutive terms from 1997 to 2007, died Tuesday morning at a hospital in Nairobi following a prolonged illness. He was 79 years old at the time of his death.
His nephew, Hillary Amboso, confirmed that the former MP died at 4 am at a hospital in Nairobi.
According to his nephew, the former MP had been battling diabetes and high blood pressure.
He was first elected in 1997 on a Ford–Kenya ticket and re-elected in 2002 under NARC’s reform wave.
He served as the constituency’s legislator until the 2007 general elections, when he lost the seat to Charles Lilechi Lugano of ODM.
Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa expressed deep sorrow following the death of Khamasi.
In a condolence message released on Tuesday, Kakamega Governor Barasa described the late Khamasi as a dedicated public servant whose contribution to the development of Shinyalu would be remembered by generations.
“I have received, with deep sorrow, the news of the passing of Hon. Daniel Khamasi, the former Member of Parliament for Shinyalu. He was a dedicated servant whose contribution to Shinyalu will be remembered,” the governor said.
“On behalf of the people and the Government of Kakamega County, I convey my deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and the people of Shinyalu during this difficult moment,” he added.
