Empowering Pharmacists for Healthier Futures: How Equity Afya is Redefining Community Healthcare in Kenya
As the global community celebrates World Pharmacists Day on 25 September, healthcare systems worldwide are turning their focus to the evolving role of the pharmacy workforce. Under the 2026 official theme, “Empowering pharmacists for healthier futures,” the spotlight shines on how pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, and pharmacy technicians are stepping into expanded clinical roles to improve health outcomes across communities.
In Kenya, where rising noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), climate pressures, and public health risks like Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) demand responsive care, Equity Afya is putting this vision into practice. Through its expanding network of clinic-integrated pharmacies and standalone community hubs, Equity Afya is proving that an empowered pharmacy workforce is central to accessible, digitalized, and affordable primary healthcare.
Dr. John Kanyi, a pharmacist at Equity Afya Dandora, offers key insights into this healthcare shift. Traditionally, pharmacists were viewed as working behind dispensing counters, filling prescriptions. Today, that role is expanding into proactive primary care.
“Empowering pharmacists is about moving us from behind the dispensing counter to the frontline of primary care,” says Dr. Kanyi. “It is about giving us the clinical skills, digitized platforms, and recognition to provide patient consultations, chronic illness refills, and health screenings.”
This transformation is crucial as Kenya faces a rising burden of NCDs like hypertension and diabetes. Managing NCDs requires continuous care, careful monitoring, and patient adherence- areas where community pharmacists excel. By integrating pharmacy services with clinical care, Equity Afya ensures patients receive uninterrupted support.
However, empowering pharmacists requires systemic support from regulators, policymakers, and health insurers. Through the Pharmacy First Approach, accredited pharmacists can manage minor conditions, offer screenings, and provide adherence support while referring complex cases to doctors. This reduces hospital congestion and lowers healthcare costs for families.
Medication safety is another key priority. Equity Afya ensures medicines are properly procured, stored, and dispensed by qualified personnel to combat counterfeit drugs. Furthermore, pharmacists serve as a vital defense against public health threats like self-medication and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). By promoting responsible antibiotic use and patient education, pharmacists help safeguard these critical medicines for the future.
To bring this care closer to everyday Kenyans, Equity Afya is expanding its clinic-integrated pharmacies and community hubs across urban and rural areas, combining affordable, genuine medications with walk-in wellness checks and direct referral pathways.
