The initiative, named “justice at your doorstep,” aims to make legal help freely available to all citizens
Bangbet and the Attorney General’s office are in a patnership set to expand legal support services across Kenya with the launch of state-run Legal Aid Centres.
The betting firm and the State Law office headed by the Attorney General Dorcas Oduor have joined forces in ensuring that Kenyans efficiently access justice by setting up Legal Aid Centres.
The initiative, named “Justice at Your Doorstep,” aims to make legal help freely available to all citizens, focusing on those who have traditionally faced barriers to the justice system.
The centres will provide free legal assistance
The partnership will be tested in Machakos county with a pilot program. The opening of the centre in Machakos is only the first phase, with plans to establish similar centres in all counties.
Bangbet firm will offer containers as the legal aid centres offices and ensure each mobile unit is installed with electricity and solar power, fitted with two soundproof consultation booths, a legal aid and documentation area, virtual court hearing facilities, solar-powered energy systems and a wheelchair-accessible infrastructure for the disabled.
The State Law office will provide staff and offer office space to pro bono lawyers, paralegal officers, and volunteers to facilitate their services to members of the public.
The Attorney General Dorcas Oduor highlighted the challenges that many Kenyans face when seeking justice.
“High legal fees, complex court procedures and long travel distances have kept justice out of reach for too many Kenyans, especially the poor, the marginalised, and the vulnerable,” she said.
“Access to justice helps ensure that all people, no matter of their financial situation or personal circumstances, can protect their rights, seek legal help, and receive fair treatment under the law. Having access to the courts is important because it helps people settle disputes peacefully through the legal system,” said the Attorney General.
